ROMANS 6:6 (KJV)
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” – Romans 6:6 (KJV)
The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross accomplished what humanity could never achieve through its own strength. Sin had enslaved humanity and separated us from God, but Christ came to bring redemption and open the way to a new life. Romans 6:6 teaches that our old self was crucified with Christ so that we would no longer live as slaves to sin. The Cross is not only a reminder of the suffering Jesus endured; it also points to the change God calls us to experience through faith in Him.
When Jesus died, He bore our sins and accomplished the work of redemption. Through His resurrection, He demonstrated victory over death and opened the way for those who believe in Him to walk in newness of life. We are not saved because we have overcome every weakness by ourselves. We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Our hope rests in what He has done, not in our ability to make ourselves righteous.
However, receiving this grace calls for a response. Paul teaches that we should no longer serve sin. This means we must stop treating sinful behaviour as something we cannot resist or something God expects us to accept. Although temptation may come, we are called to turn away from wrongdoing and depend on God’s help to live according to His Word. The Cross reminds us that sin is serious and that Christ paid a great price to redeem us from it.
Repentance requires honesty before God. We must acknowledge our wrong choices instead of defending them, confess our sins, and make a sincere decision to turn away from them. If we have been dishonest, we must pursue truth. If we have held bitterness in our hearts, we must seek God’s help to forgive. If we have allowed pride to control us, we must humble ourselves. These changes do not purchase salvation; they demonstrate our willingness to live under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Beloved, do not allow your past to convince you that change is impossible. Neither should you use God’s grace as an excuse to continue in sin. Christ has provided the foundation for a new life, and you must respond by surrendering your habits, thoughts, and decisions to Him. When you stumble, do not hide your wrongdoing or give up. Confess it, seek God’s help, and continue pursuing a life that honours Him.
Today, remember that you are not called to remain a prisoner of the old life. Jesus Christ died and rose again so that we could belong to Him and walk in the freedom He provides. Christ has accomplished the work of redemption; our responsibility is to repent, resist sin, and live in obedience to His Word. Let the reality of the Cross be seen in the choices you make every day.
